Francis "Gabby" Gabreski

U.S. Army Air Corps/Air Force 1940-67

Francis Stanley "Gabby" Gabreski was an American career pilot who served in both WWII and Korea. Although best known for his credited destruction of 34½ aircraft in aerial combat and being one of only seven U.S. combat pilots to become an ace in two wars, Gabreski was also one of the Air Force's most accomplished leaders. In addition to commanding two fighter squadrons, he had six command tours at group or wing level, including one in combat in Korea, totaling over 11 years of command and 15 overall in operational fighter assignments.

Gabreski, a Polish-American, was stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7th 1941 and soon volunteered to fly in Europe with the 315 Polish Fighter Squadron. After the United States officially entered the war in Europe Gabreski became part of the 56th Fighter Group, flying a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, assigned to the 61st Fighter Squadron, and quickly became a flight leader.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in 1945, USAWS is showcasing a WWII Veteran each month. Jim was born on November 7, 1927 in Brooklyn NY, he was orphaned at the age of 13 years old, and has been on his own ever since. With the country at war at that time he joined the Merchant Marine at the age of 16. He started in the engine room of a coal burning ship as a coal passer. Then transferred to the deck department. He was on ships during the North African campaign. Later he continued on ships bringing supplies in support of the D-Day Invasion and liberation of France.

Claude Perasso - Merchant Marine 1944-1946

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in 1945, USAWS is showcasing a WWII Veteran each month. Claude Perasso was born in San Francisco on May 31, 1926 attending St. Ignatius and leaving before graduation to serve in the Merchant Marine during WW2 in the South Pacific at age 17. After the war Claude returned to San Francisco, attended U.S.F both undergrad and law school eventually serving in the San Francisco Public Defenders Office for sixteen years before being appointed as a judge.
