Laura Buxton - U.S. Army 1988-92
Laura Buxton served as a supply clerk with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany early in her carrier and later with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell. “When we first went over to Germany, they always gave you a tour of the towers and everything, because it was still the Cold War. When the wall came down, I had the opportunity to visit the Dachau concentration camp. It was very, very solemn to know what happened there.”
While serving in the Army Laura was the victim of MST (Military Sexual Trama). According to the Veterans Administration about 1 in 3 women serving in the U.S. military respond “yes,” that they experienced MST. “I had post-traumatic stress from an MST and I did a lot of self-medication.” Today Laura volunteers with Their Voice of Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women veterans through advocacy, support, and community programs. “That is my pride and joy, volunteering and it fills my heart and it makes me feel good that I can give back.”
