Shalliea Mitchell - U.S. Army 2011-2018

Shalliea Mitchell participated in ROTC in High School and served nearly seven years in the United States Army as a 91D Power Generation Equipment Repairer (Generator Mechanic). “I went from being this person who was all into the girly-girly things to now getting down to the nitty gritty and turning wrenches and doing all the hard mechanical stuff. The same expectation was set for me as the men who were working beside me at that point and it really boosted my confidence when I'm like, I can do the same thing that they can do.”

Following Basic Training at Fort Jackson and AIT at Fort Lee, Shalliea was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia, with the 92nd Engineer Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. “3rd ID for life. I did two enlisted contracts in Fort Stewart, Georgia, and it will forever be a part of my identity, just saying the creed in the morning and being proud that I was in the forward support company Cold Steel.”

During her service she was deployed to Afghanistan from February 2013 through December 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. “When I was deployed in Afghanistan, I was one of the only female gunners in the whole battalion. And that was a very interesting and exciting experience. It really pushed me mentally and emotionally.”

Shalliea attained the rank of Sergeant (E-5) before being medically retired in March 2018.
