Floyd York - WWII Merchant Mariner

Floyd Niles York was born on a farm in the middle of New York’s Great Sacandaga Lake before it was a lake, and passed away in Vero Beach, Florida at the age of 100 years and eight months. He graduated from high school at 15 and Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy in 1944, served two years at sea during WWII, married the love of his life Carol in 1945, moved to Roslyn, New York, raised three sons and became president, chairman of the board, and CEO of the strongest mutual thrift institution in the country. Floyd believed in hard work and service to the community, and was blessed with a kind heart & sharp mind.

Ross Rowlinson a past Merchant Mariner himself and our USAWS Florida Producer met and interviewed WWII Merchant Mariner - Floyd N. York, resident of Vero Beach, Florida at his home just before his 100th Birthday.

USA Warrior Stories also helped in establishing a WWII Merchant Marine Memorial in Vero Beach, FL where Floyd was honored and presented the duplicate WWII Merchant Mariner's Congressional Gold Medal from his local Congressman Bill Posey’s office (R-FL 8th congressional District) on National Maritime Day 2023.

We honor Floyd again now after his passing on September 16th, 2023 for his service to our country during WWII in the U.S. Merchant Marine and share some of his story.
