Bill Keegan - U.S. Army 1943-46
Bill Keegan, a Rhode Island native, was born on June 1st, 1924 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as a Combat Medic in Europe assigned to the 78th Medical Battalion attached to the 8th Armored Division, aka “Thundering Herd”,
His unit fought through France and Liberated the Langenstein German Concentration Camp.
PFC Keegan was awarded the newly created Medical Combat Badge and later the Bronze Star in recognition of his front-line duty.
Concentration Camp Langenstein-Zwieberge
Concentration camp Langestein-Zweiberge was a sub-camp of KZ Buchenwald and was in service between April 1944 and April 1945. More than 7000 prisoners of 23 country were imprisoned there for this period. Of those 7,000, approximately 2,000 died in the camp.
