Stephen Nemeth - USNAG 1943-46/US Navy 1948-52
Stephen A. Nemeth (1925-2022) was a WWII US Navy Veteran who served in the Naval Armed Guard. The Naval Armed Guard was a special unit stationed on Merchant Ships during the war to protect them from German U-boats. Stephen served aboard the SS Surprise, the SS Abel Parker Upshur and ultimately the SS Santa Paula, American warships which took part in combat operations against enemy ships targeting Allied vessels and helped transport troops and ammunition used during D-Day and the Liberation of Normandy.
While serving aboard the SS Abel Parker Upshur (from February 15 to August 18 1944), Stephen helped deliver 8,000 tons of ammunition used on the beaches of Normandy, and secured the landing of 1,000 soldiers in Cherbourg while the city was still in enemy hands.
Stephen served in WWII from 1943–46, got out and was bored and then re-enlisted for four more years. He had the distinction of visiting 27 different countries during and his seven years in the U.S. Navy.
Stephen recently was awarded the Knight Legion of Honor from France. France’s highest distinction for his service during the War in bringing France their freedom.
Stephen A. Nemeth of Kissimmee, FL passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at the age of 97. He was born on February 13, 1925 in New Haven, CT where he grew up. Stephen moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1962. Stephen worked as a Plumber/Pipefitter in Ft. Lauderdale and had the honor of being on the original construction crew of Epcot. He was actively involved in The American Legion Post 10 in Kissimmee, FL. Stephen is preceded in death by his wife, Elinor, brother, Joseph, sister, Barbara. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Nemeth, daughter, Carol Matt (Ray), and son, Stephen R. Nemeth (Bernice), sister, Mary Kronemeyer, Grandchildren, Jeff Matt (Nazli) and Michele Brenner (Kevin). Great grandchildren, Ariana Augustin, Kendall Brenner, Kiera Brenner, Kailyn Brenner and Luna Matt.
The family would like to thank Vitas Healthcare for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final days.
