Sylvester McIntosh served with the 1st Battalion 9th Marines, better known as the Walking Dead. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, McIntosh threw himself on three grenades, which were luckily duds.

He applied to both the Air Force and Navy after he got out of school and was accepted by both. He picked the Navy because he wanted to serve on a carrier and he says he liked the uniform. He did over a hundred combat missions in Vietnam before leaving the Navy and then taking a job with American Airlines as a pilot.

As a Reserve Major he was deployed to Honduras as Company Commander of the Medical Team for MedRets. Oates was called back to active duty in 1991 and deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm where he served as Executive Officer of two Field Medical Units. He was awarded a Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal and 4 Army Commendation Medals. He is on the Board of the Indian River County Veterans's Council and 2nd Vice President of the Indian River County Military Officers Association.
