Winston Elliott Scott served as a Naval pilot and flew helicopters and navy planes. Scott was selected by NASA in March 1992, and reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1992. He served as a mission specialist on STS-72 in 1996 and STS-87 in 1997, and logged a total of 24 days, 14 hours and 34 minutes in space.

He applied to both the Air Force and Navy after he got out of school and was accepted by both. He picked the Navy because he wanted to serve on a carrier and he says he liked the uniform.
